I happen to have a deep affection for Ross Perot. I have spent several months working at the Perot Systems campus in Plano TX, and I even have an autographed copy of Ross Perot's autobiography.
Ross Perot is a good human being.
Remember when Jimmy Carter didn't have the cojones to rescue American hostages in Iran? Two of those hostages were Ross Perot's employees. Ross Perot and his team mounted a rescue effort. The US Government didn't do it. Ross Perot did.
Ross Perot is voting for Mitt Romney. Sweet.

Background On John Cogan:

John Cogan Has Had A Distinguished Academic And Public Service Career. Cogan is the Leonard and Shirley Ely Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and since 1980, a Stanford University Public Policy professor. Focused on domestic policy, he is an expert on U.S. budget and fiscal policy, Social Security, and health care. In addition to his academic achievements, Cogan has had a long career of public service. From 1981 to 1983, he served as Assistant Secretary for Policy in the U.S. Department of Labor, and from 1983 to 1986, as an Associate Director in the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In 1988-1989, he was OMB Deputy Director.

In 2000, he served as a senior economic adviser to then-Governor George W. Bush on tax, budget and Social Security issues. Following the election, he directed the President's budget transition team, and most recently, was a member of the Commission to Strengthen Social Security.

CNBC'S LARRY KUDLOW: "What sort of tax policy did you talk about in your speech to the Detroit Economics Club?"

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "Well, the first thing we have to do in tax policy is to make sure we don't put in place, just a few years from now, a massive tax hike. Taxes over time have averaged about 18% of the Gross Domestic Product. If the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire, that would result in a massive tax increase, why you'd see that go up and up and up. That would hurt our economy. It would slow down job growth. It would reduce the, the income levels of people across this country. It's a bad idea."

KUDLOW: "Do you think that, just on that point, sir, do you think that if the Bush tax cuts are, are not extended in 2010, do you think that would cause an economic recession in the U.S.?"

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "Well I can't tell you when it would cause a recession, but I can tell you that over time, raising taxes well above the 18% of Gross Domestic Product level would cause a slowdown in growth of our economy, would reduce our employment, would reduce the wages and salaries of people in this country. It's a bad idea. Ronald Reagan, and before him, John F. Kennedy proved that by keeping tax rates low, you create more jobs, more innovation in this country.

"Now the second part of what I talked about today was not just that tax rate, but also making it easier for people to save in this country. Our nanny state, if you will, tells us how we can save. We've got, I'm told, some 20 different savings programs with special tax provisions from the federal government. Let's make it easier. Let's say that there's a number, and I'll pick one out of the air, let's say $5,000 for people filing jointly. People ought to be able to, let's say, get $5,000 of interest, dividends, and capital gains a year without paying any taxes on them at all. Let's let people save their money without all the rules and restrictions and then spend the money the way they want to." ...

Former Lieutenant Governor Toni Jennings - Honorary Chairwoman: Jennings served as Governor Jeb Bush's Lieutenant Governor from 2003-2006 and is the first woman to hold the office. A native of Orlando, Jennings began her professional career as a public school teacher and later successfully ran her family owned construction business, Jack Jennings and Sons. She served two terms in the Florida State House, and was then elected to the Florida State Senate - a seat she held for 20 consecutive years. During that time, Jennings served as Florida's only two-term State Senate President. She also served as a Florida Co-Chair for the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign. Jennings was also named to the Florida Women's Hall of Fame.

Former Speaker Allan Bense - Chair: Bense served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives from 2004 to 2006. As Speaker, Bense worked closely with Governor Jeb Bush. He is a strong fiscal conservative, advocating spending restraint and tax cuts. He was also a proponent of continued education reform, including school choice. A native of Panama City, Bense is active in community and civic affairs. He worked his way up from humble beginnings and became one of the most successful businessmen in the Florida Panhandle. Currently, he remains involved in general contracting and road building work and serves as a member of the Council of 100, Florida Chamber of Commerce Board and the Enterprise Florida Board.

Former State GOP Chairman Al Cardenas - Chair: Cardenas is the former two-term Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. While in this role, he was appointed by the Republican National Committee Chairman to serve on the Executive Committee. He was the first Hispanic to head a major state party and remains the only Hispanic Republican Party Chairman in Florida history. In 2004, he served as Co-Chair of the Bush-Cheney Florida campaign. He is a regular opinion editorial columnist for El Diario, the largest circulating Spanish-speaking newspaper in America, and has appeared frequently on many English and Spanish TV news programs. Cardenas has represented Florida at every Republican National Convention since 1976 and held positions for both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. In Florida, Governor Jeb Bush appointed him to the Board of Trustees of FAMU. He is also a national board member of the American Conservative Union. He was recently named as one of Poder Magazine's Top 50 Most Powerful Hispanics. Cardenas is currently a partner in the Tew Cardenas law firm which has offices in Miami, Tallahassee and Washington, D.C.

U.S. Congressman Tom Feeney - Chair: Elected in 2002 to the U.S. House of Representatives, Feeney represents the people of Central Florida's 24th Congressional District. He previously served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and was Governor Jeb Bush's running mate in his first race for governor in 1994. In Congress, Feeney serves on the Steering Committee of the Republican Study Committee, the largest caucus in the U.S. House representing 100 conservative members, and is the Chairman of the House Conservatives Fund which helps elect true Reagan conservatives to the House. Feeney has been a leader for reform and a watchdog for fiscal responsibility in Washington.

Former Speaker John Thrasher - Chair: Thrasher is a former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. While leading the Florida House during Governor Jeb Bush's first two years, he helped pass some of the Governor's landmark reforms, including an overhaul of the State's entire education system. Thrasher serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Florida State University, his alma mater, where he was recently honored by having the new medical school building named after him. He also served as the Florida Co-Chair of the Bush 2000 and 2004 campaigns. He currently serves on the Clay County Board of County Commissioners. Thrasher is an Army veteran who served in Vietnam where he was awarded two Bronze Stars.

Mayor Rick Baker - Co-Chair: Baker serves as Mayor of St. Petersburg, a post he has held since 2001. He is chairman of the Governor's Municipal Mentoring Initiative, Chairman of the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida and is Group Leader to Governor Crist's Growth and Environmental Agency review board. Baker practiced corporate law for 20 years, serving as President of Fisher and Sauls, PA. He also was President of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the National League of Cities School Improvement Task Force. He is a Founder of the YMCA Neighbor to Neighbor Christmas Program and published author on the history of St. Petersburg.

Representative Dennis Baxley - Co-Chair: Baxley is a four-term Member of the State House of Representatives and currently serves as Speaker Pro-Tempore to House Speaker Marco Rubio. He is an Advisory Board Member for the Marion County Children's Advocacy Center and Marion County Children's Alliance. In 2005 and 2006, he received the Christian Coalition of Florida Faith and Family Award. He also is a 2004 recipient of the National Rifle Association Defender of Freedom Award. Baxley is the Vice President/Partner in Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services in Marion County.

Representative Jennifer Carroll - Co-Chair: Carroll was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2003. She was the first African-American female Republican ever elected to the Legislature. Carroll is a highly decorated Navy veteran. She was a Governor Jeb Bush appointee to the Northeast Regional Planning Council and is the former Secretary of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. She previously served on the White House Presidential Scholar's Commission and in 2004 was appointed to the Veterans' Disability Benefits Commission by President Bush. Most recently, Jennifer served as African-American Outreach leader in the Charlie Crist 2006 campaign and is a Team Leader for his Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs Agency Review Board.

Dudley Goodlette - Co-Chair: Goodlette is a former State Representative from Naples who served in the House from 1998-2006 representing Naples, Marco Island, and Everglades City. As a House Member, he chaired the Rules Committee and Rules and Calendar Council, and was instrumental in leading election reform initiatives following the 2000 Presidential election, statewide domestic security initiatives following the 9/11 attack on America, medical malpractice reform in 2003, and important education initiatives. Dudley has served as President of the Naples Area Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Collier County Economic Development Council, Chairman of the City of Naples Community Redevelopment Advisory Board and President of the Collier County Bar Association. Dudley has received numerous awards for his community service, including Naples Daily News Citizen of the Year.

David Griffin - Co-Chair: Griffin served as Executive Director of the Bush/Brogan second term Transition Office. He also served as Florida's Lottery Secretary from 1999-2003. During his tenure with the Bush Administration, he served as Chair of the Governor's State Agency Mentoring Initiative. Griffin served on the Florida statewide steering committees for the Bush-Cheney 2004 and Charlie Crist 2006 campaigns. Currently president of David Griffin Consulting, he is an attorney and graduate of Cleveland Marshall College of Law and Penn State University. He is immediate past Chairman of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Big Bend.

Representative Anitere Flores - Co-Chair: Flores is the State Representative for District 114 in Miami. She serves as Chair of the K-12 Education Committee. Flores is a lifelong resident of Miami and a graduate of Florida International University and University of Florida College of Law. She served as Policy Director to the Education Council in the Florida House of Representatives and Education Policy Chief under Governor Jeb Bush. Flores is currently Director of Community and Civic Partnerships for Florida International University. She serves on the Florida Bar, is a member of the Cuban American Bar Association, was honored as one of the "Outstanding Women of America" and is a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church.

Van Poole - Co-Chair: Poole is a former two-term chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. A former Florida House Member, State Senator, Senate Majority Leader, Pro Tempore and House Minority Whip from Ft. Lauderdale, Poole also served as Executive Chairman of the International Political Leaders Program. He was appointed by President Reagan to the National Advisory Council on Educational Research. He was also a nominee for the United States Senate in 1982 and served in former Governor Martinez's Cabinet. MAKING THE 2001 AND 2003 TAX CUTS PERMANENT: "Which course is better for America? A European model of high taxes and regulations? Or, low taxes and free trade - the Ronald Reagan model? That's the choice the next President will make. Some are already fighting to implement a massive tax increase. Instead, we should make the tax cuts permanent."

- REFORMING THE TAX CODE: "However, making the tax cuts permanent is only the first step. We also need reform of the tax code that moves towards a tax system that encourages growth, fairness, and simplicity."

TAX FREE SAVINGS: Governor Romney Proposes Allowing People To Save Tax Free. "It is time to make saving easy in America. I believe people should be allowed to earn interest, dividends and capital gains up to a certain amount a year, tax free and without restrictions on how or when their savings and investments are spent. As an example, let's say we chose $5,000 for joint filers as the annual tax free figure for dividends, interest and capital gains. This would help middle class families to be able to save and to invest - and spend their savings the American way: any way they want."

FISCAL DISCIPLINE: Unless Given The Line-Item Veto, Governor Romney Would Veto Any Appropriations Bills If They Exceed Spending Targets. "I have a fairly simple idea for keeping spending in check. Give Congress a spending target and then insist that it is met. If Congress does not meet the spending targets, then its appropriations bills should be vetoed. I regularly exercised my veto power while governor. The alternative is for the Congress to vest the President with a power held in some form by 43 governors, including this Governor - the line-item veto."

REGULATORY RELIEF: Governor Romney Would Reinstitute A Regulatory Relief Board To Cut Back Regulations That Choke Off Growth. "Our regulatory burden is also overbearing. I'd re-institute a regulatory relief board to cut back the regulation weeds that choke off growth. One that deserves pruning is Sarbanes Oxley - it's driving away IPO's, depressing jobs, and requiring billions of unnecessary cost. Executives who violate the law should go to jail, but the entire economy shouldn't have pay an inordinate price for the sins of the few bad actors."

NATIONAL TORT REFORM: Governor Romney Believes America Needs National Tort Reform, Not Reform State-By-State. "Another burden on our economic future is our out-of-control tort system. Last year, U.S. corporations spent more money on tort claims than they did on R&D. If innovation is the key to our long term leadership, then some tort lawyers are cashing out our country's future. I spoke with one member of the plaintiff's bar the other day. He said that the tort lawyers are ok with state reform, but not national reform. You know what state level tort reform means - it means that as long as there is one lawsuit-friendly state, they can sue almost any major, deep-pocketed company in America. No thanks, America needs national tort reform."

CAFE has some real problems. It distorts the market. It penalizes the domestic automakers. It can ignore technical realities. So before I would change the CAFE standards, I want to sit down with every major knowledgeable party and evaluate each of the alternatives. A good number have been proposed; let's decide which is the best course by looking at the data and analysis, rather than by playing to the TV cameras Let's not forget that a far more fuel efficient fleet must be part of our energy future. Latter-Day Lifer - Mitt's Conversion Story

Kathryn Jean Lopez of National Review Online continues her promotion of Mitt Romney for POTUS in her latest article. In it she discusses one of the defining moments of his conversion to pro-life conservative:

Back in 2005, when he was just a governor and a real long shot for president, Romney highlighted the disregard for human life that pervades debates on bioethics. While fighting his alma mater (Harvard) and the biotech industry, Romney explained that, although he would not sign on to a bill that would allow (and fund) the creation of new embryos to be killed in scientific research (“therapeutic” cloning), he would agree to support experimentation on surplus frozen embryos from in vitro-fertilization procedures. But proponents of embryonic-stem-cell research refused to meet him in the middle; they wanted it all.

Romney caught my attention with something he said at the time: “All of the rhetoric has been, ‘We are throwing away embryos — surplus embryos — that could be used for stem-cell research and that makes no sense.’ . . . And now, now that I’ve said, ‘Okay, I support that,’ now [the other side says], ‘No, that’s insufficient. How could you possibly limit it to that?’ Well, that’s what they’ve been asking for.” Even though Romney was ready to reach a compromise, the other side was not — and would never be. They were all-or-nothing absolutists, and Romney had exposed them.

I've been in science long enough to know that there can never be too much funding and there's always too many restictions on research. Scientists love to push the envelope (not necessarily a bad thing), but this case shows how important it is for the public to have input into what ethical restictions should be made on research. Many scientists, with their belief in their absolute objectivity and disdain for religion, can become amoral and blind to what is ethical.

Cynics then and now would say the governor made a stand against cloning purely as an act of pandering: He judged that pro-life primary voters held the key to the White House, and so he took their side. But I never bought that explanation. If it were all about winning a future election, you’d think Romney would have gone all the way — and opposed the use of frozen embryos in fertility clinics in scientific research. Instead, it seemed to me, he actually believed what he was saying.

More important, though, he walked into a teaching opportunity and made use of it. It became clear to him that advocates of embryonic-stem-cell research would not accept any restrictions; there would be no compromise from those who wanted to experiment with life at its earliest stages because they wouldn’t admit that there could ever be a reason for caution. Romney sounded like a guy who understood the dangers posed by the legislation the biotech industry was pushing. He sounded like a leader who grasped what my friend and colleague Ramesh Ponnuru wrote about in his recent book; Massachusetts was on the brink of surrendering to the Party of Death.

Even though Romney lost to Harvard & Co., his pushback helped get us to the Virgin/Branson world we’re living in today. Now polite society is talking about alternatives to embryonic-stem-cell research. But even though Romney helped change the terms of this debate, people are skeptical about his overall commitment to protecting human life. And understandably so: His record — from not all that long ago: when he ran for Senate in 1994 and governor in 2002 — suggests something less than a full appreciation of the value of human life.

If his conversion is sincere and deep-seated, it should be relatively easy for him to make a compelling case. On cloning, Romney displayed passion, intelligence, and clarity that are rare from politicians on life issues (especially these more complicated, medically advanced ones). Those attributes could be a huge asset in the next president, who will confront the unfinished business of enacting a ban on human cloning. But only Romney himself can demonstrate his sincerity and commitment. If he’s the real deal, he will have to make the case that he is — quickly, confidently, and consistently.

I those of us that are pro-life should not be so quick to judge someone like Romney's conversion to pro-life as being politically motivated. We should welcome the fact that more people are becoming pro-life. In the last election, there were actually many pro-life Democrats running for congressional and senate seats. In my experience, most people I know become more pro-life as they become better educated about the science behind human development and issues such as human embryonic stem cell research (ESR). Growing up as a Mormon, I always felt that abortion was wrong, but because it was legal under Roe v. Wade I felt ambivalent about supporting laws that limited abortion. But as I learned more about human development (that brain waves begin at 8 weeks after conception, for instance), I determined that I would support all legislative efforts to limit abortion. I became more pro-life. I think Romney went through a similar process during his experience with ESR in Massachusetts.

In December Governor Romney told NRO, in part:

I do believe that the one-size-fits-all, abortion-on-demand-for-all-nine-months decision in Roe v. Wade does not serve the country well and is another example of judges making the law instead of interpreting the Constitution.

What I would like to see is the Court return the issue to the people to decide. The Republican party is and should remain the pro-life party and work to change hearts and minds and create a culture of life where every child is welcomed and protected by law and the weakest among us are protected. I understand there are people of good faith on both sides of the issue. They should be able to make and advance their case in democratic forums with civility, mutual respect, and confidence that our democratic process is the best place to handle these issues.

Lopez sums up Romney's dilemma perfectly.

What pro-lifers need is an assurance that he has come to a firm conclusion about the implications of unrestricted, life-destroying research, and that this conclusion would pervade a Romney administration. I buy it, but for many, he’s not yet made the case. Pro-lifers need to embrace converts for the life of their cause, but they also know to trust only after verification.

Governor Romney's Conservative Leadership:

"When I ran for governor, I ran as a fiscal conservative - I had a background in building businesses, and I could tell there was a better way to run our state government. Massachusetts, like a lot of states in 2002, was facing a fiscal crisis - and I wanted to help solve that crisis, without resorting to higher taxes.

"I am proud to say that we did just that - but a funny thing happened along the way. The fiscal crisis was solved, but a new set of crises began.

"Massachusetts became a center stage for the most divisive issues facing our nation today.

"The issue of gay marriage came up. In the 2002 campaign, I was asked for my view on the matter, and I gave it - I was then and remain today, opposed to gay marriages and civil unions.

"But a year later, judges decided to legalize gay marriage in the state - the voters didn't get to decide, the legislature didn't get to decide, certainly I wasn't asked for my opinion, and I guess 3,000 years of recorded history didn't matter either. By a 4 to 3 margin, the judges on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decided to redefine the institution of marriage.

"And meanwhile, just a few T stops from the Statehouse, over at Harvard; scientists were preparing to clone human embryos - experimenting with human life itself.

"I didn't ask for these issues to be put on my plate. But as Governor I didn't have the luxury of silently sitting on the sidelines. I spent a lot of time looking at these issues, talked to a lot of people, and thought seriously about them and their implications.

"The issues of marriage and life are at the heart of a civil society. We need to be wary of those who experiment with life, who experiment with our kids, and those who toy with the building blocks of the family and society.

"The sad truth is that these experiments have been playing out for decades, and the ones who pay the price for failure are not the scientists, or the university sociologists, or the judges, or the liberal policymakers - the ones who pay the price for liberal experiments sometimes don't even have a voice. And it's time they have a voice.

"So on the issue of life, this fiscal conservative became a social conservative as well. I'm committed to defending the institution of marriage, family, and human life.

"I believe in a divine creator. And I believe every single person in the entire world is a child of God - and that as a civilized people we ought to respect life.

"I believe fundamentally that there's nothing more important to society than the family.

"And I believe in treating all people with respect and dignity and tolerance despite our differences."

Governor Romney On The Right Strategy To Prevent A Nuclear Iran:

"Someone else considering a run for the White House recently addressed the Iran issue, and you won't be surprised to find out that I don't agree with her approach.

"In a speech last night in New York City, Senator Hillary Clinton said that she needs to quote 'understand' unquote Iran better - and to help her with her education process, that we should quote 'engage Iran' unquote.

"Friends, someone who doesn't understand Iran hasn't been paying attention - at this point, we don't need a listening tour with Iran. While I support gathering intelligence about our adversaries in any way possible, engaging is not the right policy. To the contrary, economic and diplomatic isolation must be our priority.

"Indeed, she argued that our strategy of engagement with the Soviet Union during the Cold War was a model for how we could deal with Iran. Now, for all the former Soviet Union's flaws, at least they maintained a commitment to national survival. They were not suicidal. The same cannot be said about the Iranian regime. And we must stop making analogies that are disconnected from the world in which we operate.

"And someone who wants to engage Iran displays a troubling timidity towards a terrible threat."

Boston, MA - Governor Mitt Romney announced today that former Iowa House Speaker Brent Siegrist (R-Council Bluffs) and former First Congressional District candidate Brian Kennedy (R-Bettendorf) will serve as advisers to his Presidential Exploratory Committee.

"Iowa is a critical state, and we are building a strong organization with talented and experienced people. After stopping in Waterloo, Fairbank, and Dubuque last Friday, I could see that our supporters are motivated and energized. With the help of this experienced leadership, I know our Exploratory Committee will continue to have a strong presence in Iowa," said Governor Romney.

The two join Chairman Doug Gross, Rich Schwarm, State House Republican Leader Christopher Rants, and adviser David Kochel on Governor Romney's Iowa leadership team.

But none of this has stopped some of the Christian right's most influential power brokers from offering endorsements and strategic help, signaling that Romney is doing more than pandering on abortion and gay marriage. He’s on board to change the courts and their interpretation of the Constitution.

Jay Sekulow, the head of Pat Robertson’s American Center for Law and Justice (ALCJ) and one of the most prominent evangelical figures in the country, has placed his seal of approval on Romney and signed on to advise his campaign. Gary Marx, a former Bush campaign liaison to the evangelical community, is Romney’s Conservative Coalitions Director. Marx also heads up the Judicial Confirmation Network, which last year ran an ad ominously portraying "left-wing extremists" opposing the Alito Supreme Court nomination as supporting legal positions that were antithetical to "the real America."

You see, the "Mormon issue" is overblown. If you still need more evidence, I encourage you to visit Evangelicals for Mitt. What more can be said?

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has named U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers as co-chair of his presidential exploratory committee in Alabama.

Romney's announcement Tuesday came two weeks after he announced that State Treasurer Kay Ivey would be chair of the panel.

Rogers, a Republican from Saks in east Alabama, is in his third term in the U.S. House. He previously served eight years in the Alabama House, where he was minority leader.

Romney is scheduled to be in Montgomery on Feb. 9 to address the State Republican Executive Committee.

"Gov. Romney's message of lowering taxes, promoting traditional values, and providing for a strong national defense resonate deeply with the people of Alabama," Rogers, R-Saks, said in a statement.

Governor Romney's Five Step Plan Of Action To Prevent A Nuclear Iran:

" First, we must continue tighten economic sanctions. Our model should be at least as severe to the sanctions imposed on Apartheid South Africa. We should demand no less from the international community today ...

"We must also be imaginative in the way we pressure Iran economically - an issue I have been looking into. In my meetings this week in Israel, I have become aware of the potential of U.S. pension funds to further isolate the Iranian economy. We should explore a selective disinvestment policy. After a series of briefings here, I have contacted the Treasurer of my own state of Massachusetts and Governors of other states to begin this process by meeting today with senior Israeli leaders in Boston.

" Second, we must impose diplomatic isolation of Iran's Government. Ahmadinejad should not be provided the trappings, respect, and recognition of a responsible head of state as he travels. In fact, when former Iranian President Khatami traveled to Boston last year to lecture at Harvard University, I denied him state police security for his visit. The real question is: why was he invited in the first place? Ahmadinejad is even more strident than Khatami. He should neither be invited to foreign capitals nor feted by foreign leaders. This would have important symbolic significance, not just to Ahmadinejad, but to the people of Iran.

"Diplomatic isolation should also include an indictment of Ahmadinejad for incitement to genocide under the Genocide Convention. The United States should lead this effort.

"The full title of the Genocide Convention is the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Remember that word: Prevention.

"Article III of that treaty establishes that 'public incitement to commit genocide' is a punishable crime. Every signatory to this treaty, including the U.S. and most European countries, shares an obligation to enforce it. So do human rights groups that care about international humanitarian law.

"Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel, and human rights advocate and former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler have spoken out on this issue.

"In addition, former U.S. Ambassador John Bolton has been a forceful advocate for this effort, and is joined by Alan Dershowitz. If these two can agree, they must be on to something.

" Third, Arab states must join this effort to prevent a nuclear Iran. These states can do much more than wring their hands and urge America to act. They should support Iraq's nascent government, They can help America focus on Iran by quickly turning down the temperature of the Arab-Israeli conflict - stopping the financial and weapons flows to Hamas and Hizbullah ... thawing relations with Israel ... and telling the Palestinians they must drop terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist.

" Fourth, we must make it clear that while nuclearization may be a source of pride, it can also be a source of peril. The military option remains on the table. And further, nuclear material that falls into the hands of terrorists would surely provoke a devastating response from the civilized world.

" Fifth, our strategy should be integrated into a broader approach to the broader Muslim world. I agree with our friend, former Prime Minister Aznar of Spain, that a central purpose of NATO should be to defeat radical Islam. I believe this has two critical dimensions. The first is an unquestionably capable military. This will mean a greater investment by the United States as well as other nations. The second is a global partnership which includes NATO and other allies. Its mission would be to support progressive Muslim communities and leaders in every nation where radical Islam is battling modernity and moderation. This Partnership for Prosperity should help provide the tools and funding necessary for moderates to win the debate in their own societies. They need secular public schools, micro credit and banking, the rule of law, adequate healthcare, human rights, and competitive economic policies. In the final analysis, only Muslims will be able to permanently defeat radical Islam. And we can help."

Every generation needs a new revolution

Tonight's State of the Union address is looming, and indicators show that President Bush will not be speaking much about Iraq or the Middle East.

Smart move.

Bush's Iraq policy has become so incredibly unpopular that he cannot afford to spend the majority of yet another major national address in extolling his latest plan for the middle east. Instead he will be refocusing his attention on domestic issues such as healthcare and global climate change.

Dumb move.

Maybe he should just spend the two hours talking about golf or telling stories about Barney's silly games of fetch in the rose garden...

I am a republican. I am glad Bush is our president, and I respect the office. But he is in an impossible situation with the Congress and with the American people; he is radioactive.

For anything to get done on the domestic issues that face our country, he will need a cooperative Congress or overwhelming support from the American people for his plans.

With his approval rating at a solid 28% because of the failed Iraq policy, I wouldn't be holding my breath for the people.

As far as Congress goes, not a chance. They are only interested in one thing: credit. The new Democratic majority feel that this is their chance to restore faith in their party. They were going to move on these domestic issues.

With President Bush making proposals and trying to become a champion of some of these domestic issues, he will actually cause gridlock and kill the issues before they even get off the ground.

The last thing the Democrats will do is give away the credit, especially to the lame duck that 28% of America approves of.

Which is what brings me back to Governor Romney. As I was reading the State of the Union previews, I was thinking, "What can our party do? We are in a lose, lose situation with our current president."

Thomas Jefferson said:

"Every generation needs a new revolution."

And revolution is “a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.”

Every 4 years we have a revolution in this country; a presidential election, a fresh start for our country.

When President Bush's term expires, I will be excited to be "out with the old" because "in with the new" will bring fresh legs to the Republicans, and an end to the radioactive presidency of George W. Bush.

Governor Romney can champion healthcare. Governor Romney can fix social security. And he'll do it all while balancing the budget, fixing global warming, and spinning plates while standing on his head.

I am looking forward to the Mitt Romney revolution!

Mr. Weber sits on the Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Secretary of State's Advisory Committee on Democracy Promotion, and co-chaired a major independent task force on U.S. Policy Toward Reform in the Arab World. Mr. Weber has counseled numerous Presidential campaigns, and in 2004, was the Bush-Cheney '04 Plains States Regional Chairman. Prior to opening Clark & Weinstock's Washington office in 1994, Mr. Weber was president of Empower America.

According to Dean Barnett of Townhall.com, the answer is Yes!

The only remaining question is how Mitt Romney will feel about my repeated likening of him to the endearing cartoon character, Yogi the Bear. I got to know Romney pretty well when I volunteered for him on his ’94 Senate campaign; the Yogi the Bear comparison definitely shortchanges him in the gravitas department.

But in the political world, as he was in the business world, Mitt Romney is most definitely smarter than the average bear. While it’s conceivable that Romney’s rivals may be able to close the ground in the fundraising game, the Yogi factor will be Romney’s consistent advantage.

But wait, here's my favorite part:

Mitt Romney Won a Straw Poll In SC

Florida, Florida, Florida: Ex-Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) today will make the rounds of the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show in Orlando, FL this morning accompanied by ubiquitous Nat'l Rifle Assoc. exec. vice president Wayne LaPierre. Says an NRA official:

"It's not an endorsement and we were approached by Gov. Romney and his folks to see if Wayne and [chief lobbyist] Chris [Cox] would be willing to do this, and we said sure, and it's courtesy we would extend to all the candidates."
SHOT is put together by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. They invited Romney; Romney's team, in turn, learned that the NRA folks would be there, and a photo op was born.

A thousand miles north, in South Carolina, Romney won the first county exec. committee straw poll we've seen. Of the 30 members, 11 voted for Romney, 5 voted for Tom Tancredo, 4 voted for Newt Gingrich, 3 voted for John McCain, 2 voted for Tom Coburn, two for Mike Huckabee, and 1 (each) for Pataki, Giuliani and Duncan Hunter. Aiken Co. has 142,000 residents, making it the 4th largest in the state.

Is America Ready to Elect a Mormon President?

Is America Ready to Elect a Mormon President? That is a question that the media keeps bringing up, and loves to talk about. I think that if you change the question to:

In the 2008 Presidential Election, would you vote for a Mormon by the name of Mitt Romney?

I think that the answer would be yes among these categories:

People that would say or vote yes:

1: Conservative Evangelicals would say yes to a president Mitt Romney as he is the most conservative, both "Fiscally" and "Socially" of the republicans "Big 3".
2: Conservative Politicians who are not afraid of a backlash and/or threats from a certain Republican that resides in Arizona and his allies.
3: People that are Socially Moderates, but yet are Fiscally Conservative and looking for some one to clean up the Federal Governments "Super-Sized" spending.
4: People that want "Roe vs. Wade" overturned and the abortion issue sent back to the States (where it should have originally been).
5: People that want a Constitutional Amendment passed Defining marriage as between "1 male & 1 female". Of the "Big 3" only Mitt Romney can be counted on to to support a conservative Federal Marriage Amendment. While Mitt Romney sent a letter to the Senate pleading with them to vote "yes" on the FMA John McCain voted no on the FMA, and Rudy Giuliani is socially liberal.

And a "no" among these categories:

People that would say or vote no:

1: The Clinton's.
2: Pro-choice advocates.
3: Supporters of Same Sex Marriage.
4: John McCain.
5: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is also a Mormon.
6: A few "Liberal" Mormons.
7: Liberals & Democrats.

In conclusion I believe that America is ready for a Mormon president, that is if his name happens to be "Mitt Romney"!

Article about Mitt in the Boston Herald

I've said for a long time that Mitt Romney is the best candidate in the race. I feel that way because he comes out persuasively for the right side of the issues. His opponents are often left with their arguments in tatters.

Case in point. There were 2 articles about Mitt Romney today in the Boston Herald. One was about him raising 6.5 million dollars yesterday. The other one was on the opinion page about how police began under the Romney administration to randomly pull everybody over at checkpoints and check for intoxicated drivers.

The title of today's article: "Life in the harassed lane" I'll quote the last paragraph of the article just so you can get a sense of the author's point of view:

"Surely, there are equally effective ways to find and punish drunken drivers, such as intensified highway patrols, without targeting law abiding citizens. Another worthy initiative would be to forward a constitutional amendment allowing a defendant's refusal to take the breathalyzer to be admitted as evidence in court."

Sigh...

Earlier in the article...

"But is the cost worth it? According to one news report, some 60 cars were stopped by police. A total of eight drunken drivers were found."

Okay, lets put that a different way. You're walking down the sidewalk and you see 100 cars drive past you. Thirteen of those cars were driven by somebody who was intoxicated. THIRTEEN PERCENT!!!!!

Here is a link to a video of Mitt Romney strengthening drunk driving laws in Massachusets. What I want to point out is how succinctly and eloquently Mitt Romney persuades the listener to his point of view, and simultaneously destroys most if not all counterarguments.

We need this guy in the White House.

I've been up in Boston on a work assignment for about 6 weeks. It's been a challenging assignment, but as a side benefit I get to talk to Bostonians about what they think about my favorite (Ex) Governor.

It's amazing. What I hear on the negative side is either boilerplate Romney democratic talking points - 'Mitt can't be trusted...', 'Mitt is too conservative...',

Also on the negative side are the conspiracy theories...

Here's a quote from an employee of mine who eventually got fired for blatant sexual harrassment:

Ewgffbsh: "To be honest with you, I think Mitt Romney is a member of the KKK."

Me: "What? Are you serious? You think Romney is in the KKK? Why?"

Ewgffbsh: "Yeah, I think they all are. Otherwise why would there be so many crimes in the poor areas of town?"

Me: "You think the government, and Mitt Romney are all members of the KKK because of inner city crime?"

Ewgffbsh: "Yep. They're all in it otherwise why wouldn't they send the police out there to walk the beat. The police are the biggest gang in town. If they were out there stopping crime there wouldn't be any."

Me: "Wow."

JIM DEMINT SUPPORTS MITT ROMNEY!!

I think I might have one degree of seperation from Senator DeMint. I graduated from high school (Eastside) in 1995 with one- Jake DeMint, who's father may or may not be Jim DeMint. Jim DeMint is from Greenville SC.

When I heard about the DeMint senate campaign I was rooting for Jim DeMint, because I thought it might be Jake's Dad. Not that Jake and I were close by any means. We had the same Biology class, and Jake ran track (like me) for a brief time if I recall correctly our Junior year. I remember one conversation with one of my friends - Jennifer J.

Me: "You know who I think is a very arrogant person? - Jake DeMint."
Jennifer: "No, actually Jake is really cool. He might come off a bit harsh sometimes but you just don't know him. He's a good guy."

Jennifer, being the straight shooter that she is, had a lot of credibility with me. So even though I never really got to know Jake in high school, I changed my opinion of him to 'decent guy'. Even after he started driving a Camaro. Oh yeah, and one more thing. Jake was one of those kids in high school who could declare what was cool, and what wasn't. Nobody can do it for everything (except maybe John Tucker) but Jake had the kind of grounded personality where he didn't have to follow the crowd, he could just get his own crowd. I don't think Camaros are cool now, and I didn't when I was younger. But when Jake DeMint drove one back in the day, I wished I had one too.

But of course I'm not even sure Jake DeMint is related to Jim DeMint - just pretty sure.

The reason for this post is to announce that Senator DeMint has thrown in with Mitt. Kevin has already posted a link to the letter Jim DeMint sent out.

The fact that Senator DeMint has expressed support for Mitt Romney makes me happy for several reasons.

Romney will be strong in Michigan, the West (possibly even putting California, New Mexico and Hawaii into play for the GOP). He will definitely be strong in New Hampshire, and he's looking pretty good in Iowa. The South is THE big question mark in everyone's mind for Romney because of the Mormon question.

An endorsement from someone prominent like Senator DeMint is EXACTLY the kind of thing Romney supporters have been longing to see for a long time now. I'm so glad about it. It sends the message that southerners see straight. They know a qualified candidate when they see him (or her). When liberals try to paint conservatives as narrow minded bigots, Senator DeMint's endorsement says that conservatives are actually very open minded, they look at all the choices and can pick the best choice.

Good job Senator.

What are your resolutions?

Happy New Year, Texans for Mitt!!!

Undoubtedly many of you have made, or are making some new year's resolutions. Among the perennial favorites resurfacing on my list is to eat better, exercise more, and spend quality time with family.

Over the past few days I have asked many of my friends what their resolutions are. Most begin with similar resolutions, but the only new years resolution I got really excited about went something like this (in my head, of course):

q: So Gov. Romney, what are you doing with your 2007?
a: Running for President of the United States...

While most of us will end our holiday today and return to our regular mundane lives, our favorite politician is ramping up and filing papers for his exploratory committee tomorrow.

Make sure that you include a resolution on your list to support and promote Mitt on the grassroots level. He will need us in 2007 as he reveals and defines himself on the national stage and shows that he is one of the best leaders we have in this country!

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO I CAN DO BETTER

The 2008 GOP Primary conversation has taken an unproductive detour for some time now in regards to Romney’s so-called flip flops on abortion and gays. It’s probably not necessarily a bad thing, as we might as well get all the dirty laundry aired out early, but I think the conversation has gone on long enough.

Remember the choices are between:

John McCain -

I like John McCain. I have no animosity toward the man. I'm over the Keating 5 issue, and I think most Americans are too. The biggest disagreement I have with him is the gang of 14 compromise. I felt like it was snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but hey, we've got John Roberts as chief justice (my #1 favorite accomplishment of the Bush administration's 2nd term) and Samuel Alito was confirmed as well. I would have liked to see more appellate judges confirmed, and that was what bothered me most about the compromise, but on the whole I understand the logic behind the decision.(Don't agree with the logic, but I'm basically over it.)

Rudy Giuliani

I like Rudy Giuliani too. Like most Americans my heart swelled with pride to see him charging into the fray on 9-11. Whatever shortcomings New York has, the government had its act together enough that the public employees were on the job, and came together in crisis. Compare that to Hurricane Katrina where huge numbers of New Orleans Police officers walked off the job. New York is a nicer place to live, and visit since Rudy served as Mayor there. Being electable in the Northeast is a good thing for a politician running for President.

Mitt Romney

Obviously I'm in favor of Mitt Romney. I think he has all the positives of both of the other candidates and then some. He also is missing some of the negatives.

Most Americans have at least some ambivalence on both the abortion issue, and the homosexual agenda. Most Americans believe that homosexuals should not be discriminated against. Most Americans also believe that refusing to redefine marriage doesn't qualify as discrimination. Mitt Romney doesn't hate gays. He doesn't advocate that we take away their right to vote. He doesn't advocate that we refuse to hire gay people. Mitt Romney isn't against gay people. Most Americans pretty much agree with this. Most Americans are not black and white on abortion either. Very few Americans would advocate making abortion illegal under all circumstances. Very few Americans would advocate making abortion unsafe. On the other hand, very few Americans are out there saying that abortion is a GOOD thing. Americans of all stripes, Democrat and Republican have varying shades of opinion on this issue, and very few of us have had to serve in public office and make decisions. I agree with the folks over at Evangelicals for Mitt that Romney's actions should speak louder on this issue.

What about the other issues?

Who is more likely to reach across the aisle and actually get something accomplished (universal healthcare in Massachusets as opposed to the gang of 14 compromise)?

Who is least likely to have an embarrassing personal scandal?

Who is least likely to put up with corruption in his administration?

Who will fight harder for tax relief?

Who is more likely to give us another John Roberts?

Who is more likely to get conservative judges appointed and confirmed?

Who is more likely to solve the Social Security mess?

Who is smarter?

Who is more personally likeable?

Romney wins on all the issues. I don't see any need to tear down John McCain, or Rudy Giuliani to make the case for Romney. Give me an issue Americans care about and Mitt Romney is a candidate with the ability to get the job done.

Bill Frist Aide to Lead Mitt Romney's Online Team

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a likely ’08 presidential candidate, has hired Stephen Smith to lead his online communications team. Smith most recently worked for Sen. Bill Frist at VOLPAC, where he oversaw the website and handled outreach to bloggers.

The tech-savvy Smith joins two other highly respected Republicans who recently signed on with Romney. Former RNC Research Director Matt Rhoades and Kevin Madden, who served as House Majority Leader John Boehner’s spokesman, form the nucleus of Romney’s likely campaign team.

A source with knowledge of Smith’s hiring said Smith will play a key role in the design of a campaign website, should Romney decided to run. Romney is spending the holidays with his family in Utah and plans to make a decision shortly thereafter.

At VOLPAC, Smith was responsible for coordinating Frist’s interaction with bloggers, which included several one-on-one interviews, conference calls and a group meeting with bloggers that took place in the majority leader’s office. Smith was also responsible for several activism projects on VOLPAC’s site, such as Blogging for Bolton. He advised Frist to endorse Rightroots, the online grassroots fundraising effort that raised nearly $300,000 for conservative candidates.

Mitt Romney Takes Two

Beset by questions about his committment to social conservatism, Gov. Mitt Romney today adds two validators to his team.

Gary Marx, the current exec. dir of the Judicial Confirmation Network and formerly the Bush-Cheney campaign's chief staff liaison to social conservatives, will join Gov. Mitt Romney's PAC as an adviser, a Romney aide said.

If Romney runs for pres, Marx, along with Romney aide Peter Flaherty, will be in charge of outreach to the Republican base and will advise Romney on his contacts with them. Marx is a vet of Focus on the Family's VA affiliate and has also worked with Ralph Reed when Reed hung his shingle at Century Strategies.

Also, Jay Sekulow, a constitutional lawyer who's argued numerous cases of import to social conservatives before the Supreme Court, has endorsed Romney and will serve as an adviser. Sekulow is chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, although his endorsement does not mean that the organization is partial to Romney. Sekulow is close to Karl Rove and to virtually every conservative judicial luminary in the country. [MARC AMBINDER]

Mitt Romney is in Iowa Today

Republican presidential prospect Mitt Romney plans to be in Iowa today for a series of events with Des Moines-area GOP activists.

Romney, the governor of Massachusetts, is scheduled to headline a late-morning fundraiser for Dallas County sheriff candidate Chad Leonard. The trip is Romney's 11th to Iowa since the 2004 election and marks his fourth visit to Dallas County.

Romney then is expected to attend a reception with state Sen. Brad Zaun in Urbandale before speaking at a Christmas party in West Des Moines for supporters of his political action committee.

Romney is among a handful of potential Republican presidential candidates who have hired staff in Iowa as they approach decisions about whether to launch a run for the White House.

Romney has said he plans to announce his decision in early January.

Lopez: As you know, in recent days the Boston Globe and the New York Times, as well as the Boston newspaper, Bay Windows, have run pieces about your 1994 race against Ted Kennedy and your run for governor that appear to be in conflict with your current position against gay marriage. Are they?

Gov. Romney: These old interviews and stories have frequently been circulated by my opponents ever since I took a stand against the Massachusetts supreme-court ruling on same-sex marriage. This being the political season, it is not surprising this old news has appeared again. But I have made clear since 2003, when the supreme court of Massachusetts redefined marriage by fiat, that my unwavering advocacy for traditional marriage stands side by side with a tolerance and respect for all Americans.

Like the vast majority of Americans, I’ve opposed same-sex marriage, but I’ve also opposed unjust discrimination against anyone, for racial or religious reasons, or for sexual preference. Americans are a tolerant, generous, and kind people. We all oppose bigotry and disparagement. But the debate over same-sex marriage is not a debate over tolerance. It is a debate about the purpose of the institution of marriage and it is a debate about activist judges who make up the law rather than interpret the law.

I agree with 3,000 years of recorded history. I believe marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman and I have been rock solid in my support of traditional marriage. Marriage is first and foremost about nurturing and developing children. It’s unfortunate that those who choose to defend the institution of marriage are often demonized.

Lopez: And what about the 1994 letter to the Log Cabin Republicans where you indicated you would support the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and seemed open to changing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in the military? Are those your positions today?

Gov. Romney: No. I don’t see the need for new or special legislation. My experience over the past several years as governor has convinced me that ENDA would be an overly broad law that would open a litigation floodgate and unfairly penalize employers at the hands of activist judges.

As for military policy and the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, I trust the counsel of those in uniform who have set these policies over a dozen years ago. I agree with President Bush’s decision to maintain this policy and I would do the same.

WASHINGTON -- Democrats have an overwhelming favorable view of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, but she would be soundly beaten if she ran for president against Sen. John McCain, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

Underscoring the New York lawmaker's potential vulnerability, the poll also found that Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican little known to most voters, would give Clinton a run for her money.

And that's coming from the liberal media via the Los Angeles Times.

Dear Fellow Massachusetts College Republicans/State Republican Party Leaders:

I write to you today about a very important situation of concern relating to Massachuetts College Republicans. As a member of its Executive Board, I learned with profound dissapointment today that Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans (MACR) State Chairman Michael Miltenberger, a Florida native, unilaterally decided that the MACR should prematurely endorse the presidential aspirations of U.S. Senator John McCain, a decision that was covered in today's edition of "The Hotline," a major national political news website

Endorsing one presumptive GOP presidential candidate over another when the race for our Party's presidential nomination is still more than eighteen months in the future is premature at best. However, the most dissapointing part of this endorsement is its snide tone and the perception it disingenuously offers. While he has not yet officially announced his intentions, many expect our Governor, Mitt Romney, to announce soon that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. But with Miltenberger's unilateral endorsement of Senator McCain today, I speak on behalf of many MACR members concerned that top Massachusetts Republicans supporting Governor Romney's presidential bid would look unfavorably on MACR members because of the imprudence of the current MACR State Chairman.

For the sake of the future of the MACR, the final straw must be today's imprudent act of profound disrespect towards Governor Romney by Michael Miltenberger. Mitt Romney signs agreement allowing state police to detain illegal immigrants

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has signed an agreement that allows state police troopers to detain illegal immigrants they encounter over the course of their normal duties.

Under the terms of the agreement, made with the U-S Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, an initial group of 30 troopers will receive five weeks of federally funded training.

Romney, who is weighing a 2008 White House bid, has advocated building a wall along the U-S-Mexico border to help stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the country.

The duration of the new policy is in doubt because Romney leaves office early next month. His successor, Democrat Deval Patrick, has said he opposes placing the additional burden on the troopers.

John McCain as an attempt to mislead voters about Governor Mitt Romney's unwavering support for traditional marriage. In fact, his record of defending marriage is unassailable, and frankly is unmatched by any other political figure in America.

Governor Romney has NEVER supported civil unions or gay marriage -- not only has he not supported it but he has been THE champion battling to preseve traditional marriage on the frontlines. He does believe, however, that we should be a tolerant nation. America is not a punitive, mean-spirited, or bigoted country. Mitt Romney is 100% committed to a federal marriage amendment, while other possible candidates for president, including Senator John McCain, are not.

Mitt Romney Lands Another GOP Hill Insider

Gov. Mitt Romney (R-Mass.) continues to pick up staff talent from Capitol Hill, hiring Joe Wall to serve as assistant political director for his all-but-certain 2008 presidential bid.

Wall was Majority Whip Roy Blunt's (R-Mo.) floor assistant during the recently concluded Congress -- meaning that he was on the House floor during most votes and developed strong relations with lawmakers.

A Nebraska native, Wall did a stint at the National Republican Congressional Committee before joining Blunt's staff. He joins Julie Teer, Commonwealth PAC's political director, at the soon-to-be campaign.

In recent weeks Romney has also hired Republican National Committee research director Matt Rhoades and Majority Leader John Boehner's (R-Ohio) press secretary, Kevin Madden.

Mitt Romney, the Real Deal

This summer, governor Mitt Romney sat down with Red County for a one on one discussion. Our conversation covered the gamut. From the politics of health care, immigration, and government spending to the importance of compromise and the influence of his late father, the governor was engaging and impressive. Most importantly, he seemed to clearly understand how his vision, his leadership, and his policy changes could impact those on the west coast. Specifically Orange County and California.

We did not discuss his personal presidential aspirations or his religious faith. On the former, I had no illusion that the governor was going to tip his hand and suddenly deviate from a well-scripted, “I’m flattered, but…” response. On the latter, the mainstream media has been oddly fixated on the well known fact that Romney is a devout Mormon. It’s old news and does not feel pertinent at this stage.

Romney’s faith is also old news in part because of his approach to the topic. It includes a potent combination of candor, seriousness, and a disarming sense of humor. In a speech earlier this year, he was asked how his religion might affect his campaign should he decide to run for president. He quipped, “You may have heard that I’am Mormon,” then added, it’s “very difficult being Mormon” in Massachusetts, where same-sex marriage is legalized. “You see for us, marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman and a woman and a woman…”. the crowd laughed.

Should Romney declare his candidacy early next year, there will be plenty of time for a complete examination of how he will reconcile his politics, his experience, his leadership skills, his values, and yes, his religion.

So without an official public declaration of his candidacy and the field of potential rivals shuffled by the events of the November election, Romney appears to be taking all of the requisite steps of a would-be presidential candidate. From lining up grassroots support and raising money on behalf of his PACs to traveling the country and speaking on all matters both foreign and domestic, Romney has his ducks in a row.

Our conversation took place in a small anteroom adjacent to his official office. The governor appeared buoyed by the recent passage of his health care plan, a landmark piece of state legislation that seeks to provide near universal health care for the residents of Massachusetts without raising taxes. At the time of the interview, Romney had long since announced his intention not to seek reelection and his efforts to help Republicans in the mid-term election season had not yet reached a fever pitch. Romney was busy with the business of governing.

Since then, Governor Romney has visited Orange County on a number of occasions and has raised a significant amount of cash on behalf of his PAC. During one OC event in late summer, Romney organizers raised nearly $1 million. In the process, he has also gained the support of influential business and community leaders and impressed political enthusiasts
with a series of speeches that clearly and articulately conveyed his grasp of the important issues. In short, presidential candidate or not, Mitt Romney is the real deal.

Three Named To PAC's Florida Steering Committee

December 7 , 2006 - Governor Mitt Romney’s Commonwealth PAC today named three key individuals to its Florida Steering Committee. Florida’s current Lt Gov Toni Jennings, former Florida House Speaker Allan Bense, and former Florida GOP Chairman Al Cardenas all join the Commonwealth PAC team as advisors.

“I greatly appreciate these three Floridians joining my team,” Romney said. “During their years of service, they each have made an incredible impact for their state. I look forward to working with them to help strengthen the Republican party – especially in Florida.”

The three join Floridians Sally Bradshaw and Ann Woods Herberger, both former top political advisors to Governor Jeb Bush, who began advising the Commonwealth PAC earlier this year.

Toni Jennings, serves as Governor Jeb Bush’s Lieutenant Governor in Florida. She is the first woman to hold the office. A native of Orlando, Jennings began her professional career as a public school teacher and later successfully ran her family owned construction business, Jack Jennings and Sons. She later served two terms in the Florida State House, and was then elected to the Florida State Senate – a seat she held for 20 consecutive years. During that time, Jennings served as Florida’s only two term State Senate President. Since becoming Lt. Gov., Jennings has been a key figure in shaping the state's agenda for educational excellence and for affordable, accessible healthcare. She was also the co-chair of Governor Bush’s Task Force on Access to Affordable Health Insurance, and led a year-long review of the state’s aerospace industry which led to the creation of Space Florida. Jennings has chaired Task Forces on Property Casualty Insurance reform and Workforce Training and chaired the Universal Pre-kindergarten Education Advisory council.

Allan Bense served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives for the last two years. As Speaker, Bense was a close partner with Governor Jeb Bush. He is a strong fiscal conservative, and as Speaker an advocate for spending cuts and tax cuts. He was also a proponent of continued education reform, including school choice. Bense is a native of Panama City, where he is active in community and civic affairs. He embodies the classic American success story, working his way up from humble beginnings and becoming one of the most successful businessmen in the Florida Panhandle. Currently, he remains involved in commercial development and serves as a member of the Council of 100, Florida Chamber of Commerce Board, and the Florida State University Board of Trustees.

Al Cardenas is the former two-term Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. While in this role, he was appointed by the Republican National Committee Chairman to serve on the Executive Committee, the highest policy-making board at the RNC. He was the first Hispanic to head a major state party and remains the only Hispanic Republican Party Chairman in Florida history. Prior to serving as Chairman, Cardenas was a three-term Vice-Chairman for the State Party. In 2004, he served as the Co-Chairman of the Bush-Cheney ’04 Florida campaign. TALLAHASSEE - More Florida Republicans are lining up behind the presidential aspirations of Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

On Thursday, Romney's Commonwealth PAC announced that outgoing Florida Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings, former House Speaker Allan Bense, and former state GOP chairman Al Cardenas were joining his Florida steering committee.

"I greatly appreciate these three Floridians joining my team," Romney said in a statement. "During their years of service, they each have made an incredible impact for their state. I look forward to working with them to help strengthen the Republican Party - especially in Florida."

Romney has already lured former Jeb Bush advisors Sally Bradshaw and Ann Woods Herberger to advise his likely 2008 presidential bid.

Mitt Romney in South Korea

SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Yonhap) -- Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican considering a presidential bid, met with South Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Cho Jung-pyo in Seoul on Thursday.

Cho is working as acting foreign minister of the country, while his boss Song Min-soon is accompanying President Roh Moo-hyun on a trip abroad.

"We are honored to have a close partnership between our countries. And hopefully we will be successful in growing our economies and securing peace," Romney said in the beginning of his talks with Cho, which the media were allowed to cover.

The U.S. governor arrived in Seoul on Wednesday for a two-day stay, and he was also to pay courtesy calls to Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook and Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok.

Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney spending time, money in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A potential presidential candidate, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, has been spending lots of money in Alabama and will soon spend more time in the state.

Romney used his Commonwealth PAC to make $143,500 in campaign contributions to Republican candidates and party organizations during this year's elections, campaign finance reports show.

Romney is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech when the State Republican Executive Committee meets Feb. 9 in Montgomery. He visited Alabama once during 2006, appearing in Tuscaloosa at dinner honoring U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala.

Montgomery lobbyist Claire Austin, who is advising Romney's PAC on the Alabama political landscape, said Alabamians will be seeing a lot of Romney in the future.

"He's like a rock star. He's got it going," she told The Birmingham News.

"He's like a rock star. He's got it going,"Mitt's a big hit!

Romney's PAC contributions in Alabama were larger than those of another likely GOP candidate, Arizona Sen. John McCain, whose Straight Talk America PAC distributed $117,750 to Alabama candidates and party committees in 2006.

Gov. Mitt Romney 's top aide, Beth Myers, is likely to serve as campaign manager if he decides to run for president, Republican sources said.

Myers is currently the exec. dir of Romney’s Commonwealth PAC. She had been his gubernatorial chief of staff. Republicans familiar with the decision said Myers has Romney’s total confidence and an ability to keep her eye on the big picture. She's known as a tough manager, complimenting Romney's executive-oriented decision-making style.

Myers was formerly chief of staff to Mass. Treasurer Joe Malone. Myers got her start in Texas politics. A PAC spokesman declined to comment. [MARC AMBINDER]

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt Joins Mitt Romney's Commonwealth PAC

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's Commonwealth PAC issued a news release Tuesday saying that Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt has joined on as chairman of the PAC's Governors' Advisory Committee. That's a nice way of saying that Blunt has essentially endorsed Romney's expected presidential bid.

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has hired Matt Rhoades to serve as a senior communications strategist in his all-but-announced presidential bid, according to sources familiar with the internal workings of the campaign.

"He will be in a top level, inner circle position," said one source close to Romney operations. Rhoades joins Commonwealth PAC executive director Beth Myers, PAC political director Julie Teer, Republican Governors Association executive director Phil Musser, Commonwealth finance director Spencer Zwick, policy director Sally Canfield, Ron Kauffman of the Dutko Group, media consultant Alex Castellanos, microtargeting expert Alex Gage, pollster Jan van Lohuizen, and national press secretary Kevin Madden in Romney's ever-expanding inner circle.

Rhoades served as research director and deputy communications director for the Republican National Committee in the 2006 cycle and is a highly-regarded and fast-rising operative in Republican presidential circles. He had previously worked as research director for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign.
