That Veep thing, again

This one comes from the Austin American-Statesman.

Perry has been mentioned as a potential Veep candidate (mostly by supporters and a few staffers), but no public interest has so far surfaced. The latest rumor: He might pair up with Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

This is the 2nd time(that i'm aware of) that they have ran an article about a Mitt Romney/Rick Perry ticket.

Let's list a few of the people that could be Mitt Romney's VP:
1)Mitt Romney/Jeb Bush
2)Mitt Romney/Rudolph Giuliani
3)Mitt Romney/Matt Blunt
4)Mitt Romney/Condoleeza Rice
5)Mitt Romney/John McCain
6)Mitt Romney/Bill Frist
7)Mitt Romney/George Allen
And the list goes on...

Who do you want (and why) to be Mitt Romney's VP?

Mitt Romney "John Kerry Should Apologize"

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican who is considering a presidential run, said Kerry should apologize, particularly to the many soldiers from his own state serving in Iraq. Romney also said members of the Massachusetts National Guard are "more diverse, educated and prepared to do their job than at anytime in our countrys history."

"No matter where you went to school, or how many degrees you have, most people understand the strength of our nation comes from every corner of America," he said.

I have met members of the military that are more intelligent than John Kerry. His (John Kerry's) comment was out of line.

Mass. governor could make presidential bid

There are many potential candidates looking to 2008, Romney said, stating with confidence that he expects Hillary Clinton to emerge as the leading Democrat.

“I may be one of those,” he added. “Time will tell.”

I would be suprised if Mitt Romney is not a candidate in 2008.

Rockin' the Evangelical House

Kathryn Jean Lopez, the editor of National Review Online, is a big fan of Mitt Romney. Today, she reports on the reception Mitt got at the Family Research Council’s “Liberty Sunday: Defending Our First Freedom” on Sunday.

While urging support for a federal marriage amendment that would protect traditional marriage, children were the focus of the governor’s remarks. “Marriage,” Romney said, “is primarily about the nurturing and development of children.” He added, “A child’s development is enhanced by the nurturing of both genders. Every child deserves a mother and a father.” And, driving the point home: “The price for same-sex marriage is paid by children.”

Romney’s presence and focus impressed Lesette Wright, an energetic youth minister at the church. “I was very impressed with what he said about children. He understands.” Talking about how violence and other behavioral problems are often seen in children she works with who come from broken families and families with no father present, she said of Romney’s remarks, “That pain is real.”

And what about the so-called "Mormon problem" we hear so much about?

Romney said, “There was probably a time when people cared which church you went to, but that’s past. People today look to see a person’s faith in the way they live in their home with their family.”

If Liberty Sunday in Boston is any indication, there may be something to Romney’s optimism — there may, in fact, be no Mormon problem. To put it less than Christianly: It’s the issues, stupid. Perhaps, despite polls and chatter suggesting hesitancy among evangelicals or others to vote for a generic Mormon, once they see that the Mormon is a politician with a in-sync record who gives a stirring speech, singing the right tune, at an already rockin’ black evangelical church, the so-called Mormon problem may be a moot point.

ROMNEY’S COMMONWEALTH PAC ADDS THREE KEY ADVISORS; PRESS SECRETARY

October 16, 2006 - Heading into the final stretch before the mid-term elections next month, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's Commonwealth PAC today announced the addition of three top political advisors and a press secretary to his Commonwealth PAC team.

The three advisors, Sally Bradshaw, Noam Neusner, and Barbara Comstock will assist the PAC as it focuses on several key Republican races across the country. All three have extensive political and policy experience in both national and local Republican politics.

"I am pleased that Sally, Noam and Barbara have agreed to lend us their political and policy expertise," Governor Romney said. "This last month will be critical as Republicans fight to keep control of Governorships and the U.S. House and Senate."

The Commonwealth PAC also added Jared Young as Press Secretary for the PAC to handle press relations during these critical closing weeks.

Sally Bradshaw has an extensive career in federal and state government and the political arena, most recently serving as Governor Jeb Bush's Chief of Staff from January of 1999 through December of 2000. Bradshaw served as senior Campaign Advisor to the Bush-Brogan 2002 re-election campaign. She also managed Bush's 1998 gubernatorial bid, a position she also held in 1994. She has lived in Florida since 1991, holding a variety of political positions including Political Director of the Republican Party of Florida, Executive Director of the 1992 Florida Bush-Quayle campaign, and Staff Director for the House Republican Office. She has also served as Executive Director of the Foundation for Florida's Future, a non-profit grassroots public policy institute. Before moving to Florida, Bradshaw worked at the White House, where she was an Associate Director for the Office of Political Affairs from 1989-1991. She also served as a regional field coordinator for the Bush for President campaign in 1988.

Noam Neusner was President George W. Bush's primary speechwriter on domestic policy matters, including tax relief, Medicare reform, and energy. He also served as Joshua Bolten's Director of Communications and Strategic Planning at the Office of Management and Budget, a cabinet-level agency in charge of producing the federal budget. While there, he oversaw the agency's external and internal communications and was part of Bolten's senior staff. Neusner is an experienced communications strategist, speechwriter, journalist, and author. He is the founding principal of Neusner Communications LLC, a firm specializing in strategic communications, speechwriting, and policy-specific writing. Neusner's experience as a journalist includes work at the Tampa Tribune, Bloomberg News, and U.S. News and World Report.

Barbara Comstock is the former director of the Office of Public Affairs for the U.S. Department of Justice, under Attorney General John Ashcroft. She also served as a Bush/Cheney 2004 media surrogate and worked with outside conservative groups on the Supreme Court nominations of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito. In the 2000 election, Comstock served as the director of research and strategic planning at the Republican National Committee where she was responsible for developing and managing the research operations utilized by the Bush 2000 campaign. In 2001, she developed the RNC's "Winning Women" communications initiative focusing on outreach to women voters. Her experience on Capitol Hill includes the positions of chief counsel/chief investigative counsel and senior counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform and as a senior staffer to Rep. Frank Wolf (R- Va.) Comstock has been involved in numerous Republican campaigns and conventions, including serving as a Republican convention delegate and working on the Republican Platform Committee.

Jared Young has extensive communications experience. Most recently, he worked as a Senior Media Associate at The Heritage Foundation, where he focused on National Security issues and Capitol Hill outreach. Prior to that, he served for 10 months in Iraq as a Senior Press Advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority and later as the Director of the International Press Center in Baghdad. Young's Capitol Hill experience includes serving as the Deputy Communications Director for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and in the press office to Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK). He was also the Press Secretary for Inhofe's re-election campaign in 2002.

Is the U.S. Ready for a Mormon President?

Yesterday I was listening to the Michael Medved show and in talking about Mitt Romney's possible bid for the presidency, he referred to a poll conducted by the LA Times and Bloomberg back in July where responders were asked whether or not they would support a candidate based on his religious affiliation.

More than a third of registered voters -- 35 percent -- say they wouldn't vote for a Mormon for president, the latest Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll finds. That's considerably more than say they wouldn't vote for a Catholic, Jew or evangelical Christian. Only a Muslim gets a higher negative response.

Among all respondents, 37 percent say they wouldn't vote for a Mormon. More than two in five Democrats say they wouldn't do so, while about a third of both Republicans and independents say they wouldn't. Females are slightly more negative toward a Mormon candidate than males.

By comparison, 22 percent of registered voters say they wouldn't support an evangelical Christian, 14 percent wouldn't back a Jewish candidate, and 9 percent say no to a Catholic. Fifty-three percent say they wouldn't vote for a Muslim.

When I first heard about this poll, I was slightly alarmed because it seemed like there was a lot of anti-Mormon bigotry involved. That may well be the case, but I think a lot of it is also due to ignorance and misinformation. I don't know how many times I've had to explain to people what Mormons are actually about. There's a lot of confusion out there, and some of it is caused by inaccurate or sloppy journalism. I've written several letters to to editors of various magazines and newspapers where journalists have failed to distinguish between members of the LDS church (Mormons) and unrelated churches with similar names that practice polygamy. Most people whose misconceptions I've corrected are embarrassed, and also relieved to hear that those things they've heard about Mormons are not true. Many times they also go out of their way to correct their friends as well because they now have a friend who is a Mormon. I think that most people are fairminded and that the question of Mitt's religious affliation will not be a problem when he addresses their concerns about it.

One should also keep in mind that the poll was hypothetical and did not ask about a particular candidate. I agree with the sentiment of Susan Pinkus, the Los Angeles Times' polling director--``It all hinges on who the candidate is and how the public perceives him.'' Once the public gets to know Mitt Romney, I don't think that his religion will be a factor, much as it wasn't for President JFK.

The Evolution of a Pro-life Governor

Yesterday, I wrote a post on Mitt's position on embryonic stem cell research and I was looking for the article I had read about his evolution toward a more pro-choice position. I finally found it, so here's the article from the Boston Globe written by Mitt: Why I vetoed contraception bill. I've posted some excerpts below, and Mitt expresses those things I was trying to say much more eloquently.

"Signing such a measure into law would violate the promise I made to the citizens of Massachusetts when I ran for governor. I pledged that I would not change our abortion laws either to restrict abortion or to facilitate it.

I understand that my views on laws governing abortion set me in the minority in our Commonwealth. I am prolife. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate

You can't be a prolife governor in a prochoice state without understanding that there are heartfelt and thoughtful arguments on both sides of the question. Many women considering abortions face terrible pressures, hurts, and fears; we should come to their aid with all the resourcefulness and empathy we can offer. At the same time, the starting point should be the innocence and vulnerability of the child waiting to be born.

In some respects, these convictions have evolved and deepened during my time as governor. In considering the issue of embryo cloning and embryo farming, I saw where the harsh logic of abortion can lead -- to the view of innocent new life as nothing more than research material or a commodity to be exploited."

Mitt Romney and Anti-Terrorism

Yesterday, Gov. Mitt Romney announced that police will inspect passenger luggage on Boston's subway system.

The inspections will be random for the most part, but could be mandatory at some stations, Mr. Romney said in an interview. The program was not in response to a specific threat against the transit system here, he said, but to the general threat of terrorism.

“I think we recognize globally that transit systems, airport systems and the like have been targets,” Mr. Romney said, “and therefore we have to adjust our security parameters to no longer focus on just crime, but to add the additional threat of terror.”

Mitt Romney on Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Many conservatives have criticized Mitt Romney for not being sufficiently pro-life on the issues of abortion and stem cell research. Or he's cynically accused of taking a more pro-life position for purely political purposes. I believe a person's opinions can evolve based on their knowledge of the subject and their life experiences. My position abortion and stem cell research has become more pro-life since the birth of my first son and after reading stem cell-related journal articles.

Mitt has also been the governor of a very blue, pro-choice state and has had the burden of balancing his personal views with the demands of his constituents. The issue of embryonic stem cell research is particularly contentious because on the one hand stem cells have potential therapeutic value, but on the other hand human embryos are destroyed in the process. Last year, the Massachusetts legislature overrode his veto of a law permitting stem cell research in the state. In August of this year, Romney's administration issued regulations that banned the creation of embryos for research. Said Romney,

"I believe it crosses a very bright moral line to take sperm and eggs in the laboratory and start creating human life," Romney told reporters. "It is Orwellian in its scope. In laboratories you could have trays of new embryos being created."

Ok, so embryonic stem cell research is going on in MA, but Romney has fought hard to limit it despite being strongly opposed by the state legislature. He could have thrown in the towel and just signed the original bill because he knew he would lose the fight, but he didn't. And then he used his executive powers to limit the scope of stem cell research. So the scientists can do therapeutic stem cell research (within limits), and pro-lifers can be satisfied that no embryos will be created for the research. I think this is just one example that shows he has the character and leadership ability to fight for conservative ideals as President of the United States.

So we conservatives can gripe and complain that Romney wasn't sufficiently pro-life in the past, or we can say it's ok for a politician to admit that his is wrong and cheer when he does the right thing.

EVANGELICALS NEED NOT FEAR ROMNEY - PART 2 - DENOMINATION

Here is the terrifying question. Would a Mitt Romney presidency encourage people to leave their Protestant congregations, and fill up Mormon chapels?

Nope.

Does the religion of the US president even influence how many people join that religion? Have people left their pentecostal congregations in droves to become Methodists since George W. Bush's election?Did the Quaker congregations swell in number during the Nixon years?

Okay okay. A lot of people don't like George W. Bush. And Nixon went down in flames. But Reagan won big at the polls. Did people bail out of their Baptist congregations to become Presbyterian during the Reagan administration?

How about during the Clinton administration, or the Carter years? Did people leave their Presbyterian congregations and join Baptist congregations?

I don't even recall that it was an issue during the 2004 campaign. If John Kerry would have been elected would people have flocked to the Catholic church? Is that what happened when John F. Kennedy was elected? Were Evangelicals worried back then that Catholicism would somehow gain a fresh new appeal and Protestants would switch and become Catholic? I wasn't around back then but I thought the concern was that the Pope would decide on policy issues. Was that just the concern that was articulated, when the real concern was that people would go Catholic? I suspect that it was a concern during the JFK campaign.

But it was no longer a concern with John Kerry. I certainly don't remember any hand wringing about this subject in 2004.

Was it a concern?
All of the above denominations are mainstream, fairly well accepted American religious traditions. Catholics accept baptisms of most of the above denominations (Catholics don't recognize Mormon baptisms). But what about religions that fall firmly outside mainstream Christianity? If Al Gore had won the election in 2000 with Joe Lieberman as a running mate would Americans have left their religious traditions to become Jewish?
